Jeff Bezos is an American entrepreneur and investor who founded Amazon, the online bookstore that grew into one of the largest retail and cloud computing companies in the world. He also founded the spaceflight company Blue Origin and owns The Washington Post, and he has repeatedly been ranked among the world’s richest people by Forbes and Bloomberg. This Jeff Bezos biography follows his path from a childhood in New Mexico and Texas to Princeton, Wall Street and the garage where Amazon began.
Jeff Bezos was born Jeffrey Preston Jorgensen on January 12, 1964, in Albuquerque, New Mexico. His mother, Jacklyn Gise, was a teenager when he was born, and her marriage to his biological father, Ted Jorgensen, ended soon afterward. In 1968 she married Miguel “Mike” Bezos, a Cuban immigrant who had come to the United States as a teenager. Mike Bezos adopted Jeff, who took his stepfather’s surname. Bezos has two younger half-siblings, Christina and Mark.
Bezos showed an early aptitude for science and mechanics. He spent many childhood summers on his maternal grandfather’s ranch in Cotulla, Texas, where he helped with chores and repairs; he has often credited his grandfather, a former official at the U.S. Atomic Energy Commission, with encouraging his self-reliance and interest in technology. The family lived in Houston and later in Miami, Florida.
His mother, Jacklyn Bezos, who was an early investor in Amazon and co-founded the family’s philanthropic foundation, died in 2025.
Bezos attended Miami Palmetto High School, where he graduated as valedictorian in 1982. He then enrolled at Princeton University, initially intending to study physics before switching to electrical engineering and computer science. He graduated summa cum laude in 1986 with a Bachelor of Science in Engineering and was elected to the Phi Beta Kappa and Tau Beta Pi honor societies.
After Princeton, Bezos worked at Fitel, a financial telecommunications startup, and then at the bank Bankers Trust. In 1990 he joined D. E. Shaw & Co., a quantitative hedge fund in New York, where he rose to become a senior vice president. While researching internet business opportunities there, he became convinced that online retail would grow rapidly, and he chose books as a starting point because of their huge selection and ease of shipping.
Bezos left D. E. Shaw in 1994, drove across the country to Seattle and founded the company on July 5, 1994, in a rented garage in Bellevue, Washington. It was originally named Cadabra before being renamed Amazon, after the world’s largest river. The site began selling books online in 1995, and Amazon went public in 1997.
Under Bezos, Amazon expanded into music, electronics and nearly every other retail category, and it built a vast logistics network. The company launched Amazon Prime in 2005, Amazon Web Services in 2006 and the Kindle e-reader in 2007. AWS went on to become one of the world’s leading cloud computing platforms. Bezos stepped down as CEO on July 5, 2021, exactly 27 years after founding the company, and became executive chairman; he was succeeded as CEO by Andy Jassy, who had led AWS.

Bezos founded Blue Origin in 2000 to develop reusable rockets and lower the cost of access to space. On July 20, 2021, he flew to the edge of space aboard the company’s New Shepard suborbital vehicle alongside his brother Mark and two other passengers. Blue Origin’s heavy-lift New Glenn rocket reached orbit on its first launch on January 16, 2025, and the company holds a NASA contract to develop a crewed lunar lander for the Artemis program.
In 2013 Bezos personally bought The Washington Post for $250 million. Through Bezos Expeditions he has invested in many technology companies, and he was an early investor in Google. In November 2025 he co-founded Project Prometheus, an artificial intelligence company focused on engineering and manufacturing, where he serves as co-chief executive alongside Vik Bajaj.
Bezos married MacKenzie Tuttle, a fellow D. E. Shaw employee now known as the novelist and philanthropist MacKenzie Scott, in 1993. The couple have four children. They announced their divorce in January 2019, and it was finalized that April.
Bezos became engaged to Lauren Sánchez, a former journalist and helicopter pilot, in 2023. They married in Venice, Italy, on June 27, 2025. In 2003 Bezos survived a helicopter crash in West Texas while scouting land for Blue Origin, escaping with minor injuries.
In 2020 Bezos pledged $10 billion to launch the Bezos Earth Fund, which supports efforts to address climate change and protect nature. In 2018 he created the Day 1 Fund, which supports organizations helping homeless families and a network of tuition-free, Montessori-inspired preschools known as Bezos Academy. In 2021 he introduced the Courage and Civility Award, giving $100 million each to chef José Andrés and commentator Van Jones to distribute to charities of their choice.
Bezos is widely credited with shaping modern e-commerce and popularizing cloud computing. His emphasis on customer obsession, long-term thinking and what he called “Day 1” culture became influential in business circles worldwide. Time magazine named him its Person of the Year in 1999, recognizing him as a pioneer of internet commerce.
His annual letters to Amazon shareholders, beginning with the 1997 letter that stressed long-term value over short-term profits, are widely read by investors and executives. Beyond business, he has funded projects meant to encourage long-range thinking, including a giant mechanical clock designed to run for 10,000 years that is being built inside a mountain in West Texas. In 2021 he also gave $200 million to the Smithsonian’s National Air and Space Museum, one of the largest gifts in the institution’s history.
